The Situation: I suspect that my teen has been smoking CIGARETTES within the last 4 days.
**BEFORE YOU BEGIN: If you have not had “the talk” with your teen and utilized the three-step checklist to explain the home testing process and the reasons for implementing it, please do so BEFORE implementing your strategy.
Get Started: Administer the recommended test for this strategy. (see below)
Implement Strategy: The counselor recommended strategies suggest the following actions based on your results.
If negative: Reward your teen in accordance with the agreement you made up front and hopefully put in writing! Set your “TestMyTeen Randomizer” for a reminder to test at whatever frequency you feel is most appropriate for your situation (We suggest every 60, 90, or 120 days unless you sense something change for the worse shortly thereafter and want to test more frequently).
* Caution: Sometimes teens are at the highest risk to use within 7 days of a test because they think the odds of being tested are the most remote.
If positive: Implement the consequences that you and your teen agreed to in advance (and hopefully put in writing). Test regularly (once every 4-7 days) until you get 2-3 consecutive negative results and believe usage has stopped. Set your "TestMyTeen Randomizer" for a reminder once every 30 days and only move to longer intervals of 60, 90, or 120 days when you feel certain the usage has stopped. Don't forget to reward your teen for achieving negative test results.
